Bonus Points and Preference Points
Preference Points are used for drawing Nonresident Combination Licenses. Preference Points move you ahead in line for the general license drawing. Hunters with the most Preference Points are drawn before hunters with fewer preference points. A small number (25%) of Nonresident Combination Licenses are issued through a random drawing to applicants who have no Preference Points. Any accumulated preference points are lost when the hunter draws a Nonresident Combination License or if they do not apply in consecutive years. A hunter can have a maximum of 3 points. An additional outfitter endorsement point can be applied to an application when booked through a licensed outfitter.
Bonus Points are used in other drawings. For our rifle season bull elk hunters, these points play an integral role. They offer additional chances of being drawn for a first-choice license or special permits for a given species. Bonus Points are not used in second- or third-choice drawings. The Bonus Points do not guarantee a permit to the applicants with the most Bonus Points, but they do significantly increase the odds of being drawn. An unlimited maximum number of Bonus Points can be "banked" but only 1 can be purchased per year.
